What it is

Public skating is open time on the ice. Everyone skates in the same direction around the rink. There are no sticks or pucks during public skates; those are for shinny sessions.

What to bring

  • Skates that fit well and are sharp. Many arenas have a skate sharpening service.
  • A CSA-approved helmet. Many cities require helmets for children, and recommend them for everyone.
  • Warm layers, gloves or mittens, and a water bottle.

What it costs

Many cities run free public skates, especially on holidays and school breaks. Others charge a small fee. Outdoor rinks in parks are usually free. The schedule on each city page shows the price of each session.

Types of sessions

  • Public or leisure skate: open to all ages.
  • Parent and tot skate: for young children with an adult.
  • Adult or 55+ skate: a quieter session for adults.

Tips for your first visit

  • Skate in the same direction as everyone else, and leave the ice at the door when you rest.
  • Beginners can hold the boards or use a skating aid if the arena has them.
  • Outdoor rinks depend on the weather: check the rink status before you go.
