York Regional Police Warn of Cellphone Upgrade Scam
York Regional Police have issued a public warning regarding an ongoing cellphone upgrade scam that involves fraudulent returns of electronic devices.
York Regional Police are alerting the public to a cellphone upgrade scam. The scam involves individuals posing as telecommunications representatives who offer deals such as discounts or free upgrades. Victims are persuaded to upgrade their phone, add a new line, or order devices through their legitimate telecommunications account. Suspects may request account information or guide victims in placing orders on the provider's website.
Devices are shipped to the victim's home address. Suspects then contact the victim, claiming a shipping error, and direct them to return the device using a prepaid shipping label or QR code provided by the suspects. These return labels are fraudulent and redirect the devices to the suspects or a third-party location, not the telecommunications provider. Victims are then responsible for device financing, outstanding balances, and monthly service fees for devices they no longer have.
On August 13, 2026, investigators executed a search warrant at a Markham residence, recovering approximately $40,000 worth of mobile phones and tablets. Boran SUN, 22, of Markham, has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime in connection to this scam. Investigators believe there may be additional victims across Canada.
