Remembrance Day in York Region: Questions and Answers

Is Remembrance Day a statutory holiday in Ontario?

No. Remembrance Day is not one of the nine public holidays under Ontario's Employment Standards Act. An employer can give the day off, but the Act does not require it. In 2026, November 11 is a Wednesday, so most services in York Region take place on a working morning.

Why do ceremonies stop at 11 a.m.?

The First World War ended with the Armistice at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The first Remembrance Day, in 1919, was called Armistice Day. Services pause for two minutes of silence at that hour.

When is the 2026 poppy campaign?

From 2026, the Royal Canadian Legion runs its National Poppy Campaign every year from October 24 to November 11. Donations stay with the local Legion branch to support veterans and their families.

Where are the Remembrance services in Newmarket?

The Newmarket Legion holds its Remembrance Parade on Sunday, November 8, from 1 p.m. at Doug Duncan Drive, with a service at the cenotaph in Veterans' Memorial Park (D'Arcy and Church Street). On November 11, the Newmarket Veterans' Association holds its service at Newmarket Cemetery, 112 Main Street North, from about 10:30 a.m.
