Getting started with Badminton in York Region

What it is

Badminton is played with a light racquet and a shuttlecock (a "birdie") over a high net. Drop-in sessions are mostly doubles. The shuttle must not touch the floor, and points are scored on every rally.

What to bring

  • Indoor court shoes with non-marking soles. This is the most important item.
  • A racquet. A basic one is enough to start; some centres lend them.
  • Shuttlecocks. Many drop-ins ask players to bring their own. Nylon shuttles last longer; feather shuttles fly better.
  • Water. Gyms get warm during evening sessions.

What it costs

City drop-in badminton usually costs a few dollars per visit, and adults 55+ often pay less with a membership. Passes cost less per visit if you play every week. The schedule on each city page shows the price of each session.

Skill levels

Most sessions are open to all levels. Some centres run separate beginner, intermediate or competitive times. Look for the level on each session.

How drop-in play works

There are usually more players than courts. Players wait their turn, and a new group goes on after each game, often to 21 points or a set time. Popular evening sessions fill quickly, and some cities ask you to reserve a spot online.

Tips for your first visit

  • Arrive early: evening badminton is one of the busiest drop-ins.
  • Learn the doubles service court: short and wide for doubles serves.
  • Say "sorry" when your shuttle lands on another court, and wait for a break in play to get it back.
