What it is
Drop-in basketball is pick-up play: players form teams on the spot, usually half court or full court depending on the number of players. Many centres run separate times for youth and adults.
What to bring
- Indoor court shoes with non-marking soles.
- Water and a light and a dark shirt, so teams can split quickly.
- Your own ball for warm-ups, if you have one.
What it costs
Youth basketball drop-ins are often free or very low cost. Adult sessions usually cost a few dollars per visit, and some cities ask you to reserve a spot online. The schedule on each city page shows the price of each session.
How drop-in play works
Winners often stay on the court, and the next team plays them. Games are usually short, to a set score. Call your own fouls, and keep the game friendly.
Tips for your first visit
- Check the age group of the session before you go: youth and adult times are separate.
- Arrive early to get into the first games.
