Getting started with Pickleball in York Region

What it is

Pickleball is played with a solid paddle and a light plastic ball with holes, on a court about a third the size of a tennis court. Most drop-in play is doubles. The serve is underhand, and nobody may volley the ball while standing in the zone next to the net (the "kitchen"). These two rules keep rallies long and make the game easy on the body.

What to bring

  • Indoor court shoes with non-marking soles. Running shoes slip on gym floors.
  • A paddle, if you have one. Many centres lend paddles to beginners; ask at the front desk.
  • Water and a light layer for outdoor courts in spring and fall.

What it costs

City drop-in sessions usually cost a few dollars per visit. Outdoor courts in parks are often free and first come, first served. Multi-visit passes cost less per visit if you play every week. The schedule on each city page shows the price of each session.

Skill levels

Sessions are often split by level:

  • Beginner: you are learning the rules and the serve.
  • Intermediate: you can keep a rally going and know where to stand.
  • Advanced: fast play with a lot of dinking and drives.

If you are not sure, start with a beginner or "all levels" session. Players are usually happy to explain the score.

How drop-in play works

Players wait in line with their paddles, often in a paddle rack by the court. When a game ends, the next four players take the court. Games are usually to 11 points. Some cities ask you to register online a few days ahead; others are first come, first served.

Tips for your first visit

  • Arrive 10 minutes early to sign in and watch a game.
  • Learn to call the score: your score, their score, and the server number.
  • Stay out of the kitchen when you hit a volley.
