Unionville, Markham

Unionville takes its name from the Union Mills, built by Ira Allen White in 1839. Toogood Pond began as a mill pond on Bruce Creek, and most buildings in the old village date from the later 1800s. The heritage district runs from that pond in the north to the Rouge River in the south.

The Unionville Festival

The festival is the street's big weekend each June. The 2026 edition ran on June 6 and 7, and the local paper said that the restoration of Main Street let it cover the whole street again. It described a parade, live entertainment, vendors and food. The festival began in 1969 as a protest against a plan to widen Main Street. The Varley Art Gallery ran a free art activity from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.

The 2027 date is not confirmed. The Main Street Unionville events page names the festival but listed no date when we checked on November 1, 2026. Check that page in spring.

GO Transit named Unionville GO as the closest station in its 2024 festival notice.

Stops along the street

Walk it from the mill to the pond. Stiver Mill is one of Markham's last surviving grain elevators and feed mills, and some of its original equipment remains. The City bought it in 1993 and renovated it in 2017, and it is now a gathering space.

The Varley is free, and it closes on Mondays. Thursday Night at the Bandstand was listed as returning for 2026. The BIA notice for its car show says that Main Street closes on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. during the show.

A short plan

With small children, start at the pond and finish at the gallery. For a rainy hour, the Varley is the indoor stop. Unionville GO on the Stouffville line is the train option, and GO lists walking or YRT from the station.
