Volunteer Opportunities in Markham

Markham runs one volunteer system for most of its public places, so one account and one interview can open the museum, the library, the Varley, the theatre and city events. The minimum age is 14, which suits high school community hours.

The four steps, in order

Create a volunteer account on the City platform and add each department that interests you. Then attend one interview. One interview covers all departments, except Aquatics.

Get the Vulnerable Sector Check only after you are accepted. York Region residents apply through York Regional Police with a reference letter from the City, which you request at [email protected]. The City lists the fee as $35 with that letter or a valid student card. Applicants under 18 must apply in person.

Last, complete the online General Orientation and AODA training. Each is a video of about 20 minutes with a quiz. The check and both courses renew every two years.

Before you sign up for a shift

The library treats a shift as a commitment. Tell it before the shift if you cannot attend. More than three missed shifts without notice means that you repeat the interview.

The library page gives no minimum number of hours, so ask the department if you need a set total for school.
